Campli is a town rich in history and traditions that it still preserves. In the square is the Parliament Palace (today Town Hall), characteristic for its ogive arches, the three – mullioned windows and the wide medieval portico. In front of it, there is the beautiful cathedral of Santa Maria in Platea (XIV century).
Along the main street there are mansions of great beauty, like the Chemist’s House and the Physician’s House, with wonderful cloisters and open galleries
In the nearby Church of S. Paolo there is the Holy Staircase.
In 1772 Pope Clement XIV recognized to the city the “Privilege of the Holy Staircase”, that allowed the absolution of sins and, on certain days, the Plenary Indulgence with the same value of that obtained in Rome. To obtain absolution , the believers climb up on their knees, praying, the 28 wooden steps of the Staircase. On the walls, precious paintings accompany along the ascent and tell about the moments of Christ’s Passion. In the Archaeological Museum are preserved the finds of the neighbouring Campovalano. Worth seeing there is the church of San Pietro, dating back from the VIII century and rebuilt in the XII – XIII centuries
