Church of S. Maria della Piazza
This is one of the most important religious buildings of the region. Furthermore, this church is a strong symbol of the integration in the Adriatic space, because of the decoration in precious Dalmatian marble that you can admire in the lower section of the façade, that is completely covered by four levels of small stone arched. The Romanesque church was built at the beginning of the XIII century over a pre-existing religious building. In the Middle Ages the social life of the city run in front of this church. Goods arrived from the sea were exchanged, taxes were paid in the customs house.
S. Maria della Piazza is at the same time the starting point to visit the historical centre of Ancona and a crucial place for tourists willing to realise the Adriatic dimension.
