This is Ancona's most important monument and one of the most important medieval churches in the Marches and Italy. The multi-faceted structure, which has Byzantine and Gothic elements on an essentially Romanesque base, reflect the series of constructions that created this building, but it is also a symbol of the role of artistic intermediary played by the city between the art and culture of yhe Adriatic and that of the East.
On the summit of the hill, the Greek founders of the city built an Italic temple dedicated to Aphrodite Euplia, the protector of sailors. The ancinet evidence left us was confirmed by archaelogical evidence in the mid-20th century when, during work necessary following the bombardments, the ruins on an ancient temple were found below the foundations of the present church.
The facade is divided into three parts. At the top stands the Romanesque-Gothic porch with a full-centre arch supported by four columns. On the interior curve of the arch, on the sides, are reliefs of the four evangelists. Next is the Romanesque-Gothic portal, with red and white stone from Conero.
The interior has a Greek-cross plan with a nave and two aisles, divided by Roman columns with Byzantine capitals.
