Church of S. Francesco alle Scale

This church over-looks the irregular shaped piazza with the same name from atop a flight of steps, creating a lovely scene. The building has a rather troubled architectonic past. The original church and annexed convent date from 1323 and were the work of franciscans, who dedicated the church to St Mary major. In the mid-15th century, it was given its currenti name and the portal that adorns the facade.Major restructuring work, not always in harmony with the original building, was carried out from 1777 to 1790 by Francesco Maria Ciaraffoni.
