The natural area around Atri is particularly interesting because of the so-called Calanchi, a type of karst formations created by of erosion. This area is now contained in the nature reserve of Calanchi of Atri, which comprises over 350 hectares.
The area represents one of the most fascinating sceneries of Abruzzo: the calanchi, magnificent natural architecture, also known as “Bolge” or “Scrimoli” in Italian
The imposing and harsh aspect of the formations is the result of ongoing erosion, caused by deforestation in the past and enforced by the continuous drying up and washing away of the clay soil.
As for animal life, the area is home to numerous birds of prey: kestrel, sparrow, screech and barn. In addition, the area makes a good home for animals common in hilly areas of sand and clay, where they easily dig out a burrow or hole: badgers, foxes, hares and of course the porcupine, symbol of the reserve.
The area is also interesting for its plant life. On the dry and often saline parts of the calanchi plants have adapted to the specific circumstances, such as caper, wild artichoke, golden spined aster, wild gladiolus, fragrant broom, tamarisk and liquorice. The liquorice plant, in particular, has become a source of income for the families that work the land around the calanchi.
