In the mid-18th century, the Jesuits decided they needed a fitting location in the city and so they chose this church, wich had stood there since 1605, and trusted the restructuring work of the building and the adjacent convent to Luigi Vanvitelli. The young architect took to the task with passion and created this small masterpiece, insertes harmoniously in the sorrounds. The facade has curved lines with a tall Tuscan pronaos, jutting out, creating a lovely colour contrast between the white marble of the pronaos and the pale red of the brick facade. Vanvitelli was also responsible for the restructuring of the monumental yet elegant interior, with a Latincross plan and single nave, surmounted by a dome, and spacious lateral chapels.
