Monte San Vito is situated on the promontory facing the low valley of Esino river towards south at about 135 meters on the sea level. The village is located on a hilly area amid the valleys of the torrents Triponzio and Guardengo from the top of the near municipality of Belvedere Ostrense.
Just like the Triponzio, the hilly backbone follows a wide curve which, from the parallel course of Esino valley, bends into a perpendicular position appearing on the valley in three small promontories. On the one in the middle, the highest, Monte San Vito must be particularly mentioned for the chiesa collegiata di san Pietro Apostolo (a big structure built in 1753), the municipal palace (a building occupying part of a castle built by the Malatesta before 1430, completely restructured in ‘500), the historical oil mill with the ex agricultural association now used as a cultural tourist centre.
From the centre along the hills, secondary crests depart where the rural landscape is characterized by the presence of vast vineyards, olive groves and orchards, with the typical products characterizing these hills, lands devoted to the “lacrima” wine and olive oil. On the northern part of the village down to the small valley created by the Fosso del Vallone, it is possible to find two rural fountains, easy to reach from the village and still used.
The fountain of the pipes, located below is the most attracting one even if it needs some restructuring. It is composed of two covered spaces, one in which the water comes out from three pipes and the other equipped with a small tank to be used as a washboard or water-hole.
Monte San Vito territory offers interesting moments of reflection since its landscape, characterized by vast crops of vineyards and olive groves, represents a new landscape, a hilly area that can be defined as a “landscape park”, a particular place where, if people are capable of managing the current processes, a new culture of living can reaffirm.
A precious evidence of rural industrial archaeology is offered by the oil mill (dated back to the XVII century) which has been recently recovered and restored thanks to the contribution of Marche region and transformed into a tourist museum as an evidence of Monte San Vito inclination to produce a very high quality olive oil. Situated on the old via Grande, today via Gramsci in the historical centre, the oil mill represents a remarkable historical structure not for its architectural features that can not be considered as monumental or prestigious but rather for its almost unaltered structure still equipped with original components.
The oil mill has a simple rectangular plan and is structured on a double level: the basement floor of the real oil mill and the ground floor destined as a storage for olives harvesting, with the floor inclined and the sewage drain.
In Monte San Vito it is possible to visit two rural houses “a maltone”:
Borghetto, via Croce di Guerra, clay shed
Borghetto, via Selva 71/a, clay shed
