Both lakes are characterized by a specific shape, dimensions and colors, and by their origin they belong to the so-called caved lakes, which means that they were formed by ceilings of large caves caving in.
Crveno jezero is located 1.5 kilometres northwest of Imotski. The limestone shores are almost completely vertical and are mostly red-brown, the color which gave the lake its name.
