Regional Chamber of Commerce of UziceThe protected area has an extension of 150000 hectares, which makes it the largest in Europe. 2300 vegetal species live in the park, corresponding to one fifth of the whole European flora, together with some of the rarest animals living in the Appenines: the royal eagle, the chamois from Abruzzo, the wolf.
In the park there are two of the most important massifs of the entire Appenines: the group of the Gran Sasso, with its inaccessible but ideal faces for alpinism and the Monti della Laga, an unpolluted reign of woods, gorges and spectacular waterfalls. All that consists of an extraordinary naturalistic patrimony, extremely variegated and constantly watched by the “sleeping giant”, the Gran Sasso which, with the 2912 meters of the Corno Grande (Big Horn), is the highest peak of the Appennines.
In the park nature becomes a synonym of panorama as well as the one you can enjoy from the “balconies” of monte Camicia, of singular valleys just like the Chiarino, Venacquaro and Calderone ones, the southernmost European glacier, of secular beech-woods just like the Martese one, of torrents and waterfalls, like the ones of the Laga mountain chain, called Morricana and Salinello, situated in the heart of monti Gemelli.
