Morro d'Alba is located on a peak reaching the 199 meters on the sea level, on the hill amid the valleys of the torrents Triponzio and Guardengo from the near municipality of Belvedere Ostrense, in a position whose morphology guarantees a wide view of the territory. 10 kilometres far from the sea on the line of hills between Senigallia and Jesi, Morro d'Alba dominates the surrounding countryside and still preserves numerous evidences of its past. The rural landscape is characterized by the presence of vast vineyards and olive groves, the typical products characterizing these hills, lands devoted to the “lacrima” wine and the olive oil. Other reference places in the territory of Morro d’Alba are identified by the presence of urban centres such as Santa Maria del Fiore, or isolated villas and churches, stabilized on the secondary most extended hills, such as Sant'Amico and Malviano. Above all Sant'Amico landscape is characterized by the presence of villa Carotti park and by a concentration of historical handiworks like Villa Marotti Campi, two churches (an older one and one built in 1898 by Carotti family) and the fountain so-called Fonte del Re (King’s fountain).
The village conserves a very interesting wall defence fence dated back to the second half of the XV century with high slopes on which to find houses with characteristic arcades below which around the built-up area there is a path called slope. In the pentagonal bastions siding the walls magnificent belvederes are made out.
The walls with their internal path, the beautiful vaults, the municipal palace, the church of San Gaudenzio and the ex church SS. Annunziata, today auditorium are only the most important steps for all those who wish to go over all the historical events of this small rural village.
Morro d'Alba “lacrima” wine, acknowledged as a DOC “denominazione origine controllata” wine (wine with controlled origin) in 1985, has been well known for a very long time.
It seems to be mentioned in some documents dated back to the ancient Roman period. The legend tells that in 1167 Federico Barbarossa could appreciate it when, started the siege to the city of Ancona, he chose Morro d’Alba castle as his own dwelling. The production area is in the province of Ancona and is comprised in the municipal territories of Morro d'Alba, Monte San Vito, San Marcello, Belvedere Ostrense, Ostra and Senigallia.
This wine is obtained from an ancient autochthonous vine, the “lacrima”, which was traditionally trained to the elm and the maple and was cultivated in the rich row of trees characterizing the hills of the production territory. The name “lacrima” is due to the fact that the grapes peel, when arrives at the maximum point of ripeness is cut, and its content starts dripping as if it were tears. The “lacrima” grapes peel has also a remarkable thickness which, during the maceration phase, releases a huge quantity of anthocyanin, tannin and colouring stuff.
The “lacrima” vineyard is extremely versatile: it well suits the classic vinification for the production of normal table wines, it is very good in carbon maceration to obtain a new wine with a bouquet which is far beyond the average and is wonderful for the vinification in raisin wine.
In Morro d'Alba it is possible to visit a rural house “a maltone”:
