Courses

Ancona – Mali Losinj

The most important touristic, administrative, commercial centre of Absirtidi Islands.

It is necessary to cover about 67 miles with a course of 35°. If the northwest wind blows, it blows to the port side of the ship with an angle of 80° to the prow.
Round mid crossing, on our left, we raise a group of ten artificial islands (3/4 miles away); they confirm the right direction of the voyage.
Before entering the natural harbour of Mali Losinj, you meet the Island of Susak (on your right, 1 mile from the port). It is a very beautiful Island, but we recommend to avoid intermediate ports and to visit it after calling port at Mali Losinj in order to attend the customs formalities at the customs house.
Before entering the port, you have to fly the Croatian flag (under the starboard crosstree); you’ll fly the flag all during the voyage across Croatian sea.
Underneath the Croatian flag, it has to be hoisted the "Q" (Quebec) flag; it is a yellow rectangle and, according to the International signal book, it means "my vessel is healthy and I request free practique". Heading for Mali Losinj, while leaving the lighthouse of point Torunza on your left and the lighthouse of cape Kriz on starboard, we enter the natural harbour and steer south-eastwards to the town.
After having covered round a mile, we found the Police Station on our left (thanks to the Croatian flag it’s easy to identify it); we berth there to attend the first customs formalities (Police and customs examinations). After the police and customs examination, it’s possible to lower the "Q" flag and sail to the harbour-master’s office (it is round a mile away from the Police Station and 200 metres before the limit of the port) in order to complete the compulsory customs formalities also by paying a tax which is proportioned to the boat length.
Now we’re free to go ashore and visit a very welcoming town
Mali Losinj is the most important tourist, commercial, and administrative centre in the Absirtidi Islands. The most glorious period of Mali Losinj begun in the 17th century, when the town became the most important Naval Station (with the annex shipyard which is still in operation) in the zone
In the second half of 19th century, the natural harbour of Mali Losinj was the second most important port in northern Adriatic; the firs one was Trieste. The ship-owners from Mali Losinj succeeded in having 1500 sailing-vessels, and the captains from Mali Losinj sailed all over the world
Besides, at Mali Losinj was born a great Italian man of yachting: the Admiral Tino Straulino. He died few years ago, after having spent his life in strict contact with sea, and yachting. Straulino’s parents lived in Artatore: a very beautiful bay in the natural harbour of Mali Losinj. When Strulino was a child, Mali Losinj was an Italian town so, thanks to his far-seeing parents, he had the opportunity to begin practising sailing; so much so that adult he took part in the Olympic Games and win the gold medal.
Many amusing anecdotes are told about him. It is told that once upon a time, while being in command of a sailing boat he managed a very difficult mooring just by steering sailing. Those present were so amazing at the rigging that one of them who didn’t know him personally exclaimed: "Who are you? Straulino?" and he simply answered "Yes!".
With the decline of the commercial sail marine, it starts the decline of the naval industry; but at the same time, the tourism starts to develop. The tourism development was promoted by the mild climate (Mali Losinj is to the north of Ancona, but the vegetation is like the subtropical one.
The town is very picturesque; it is rich in ancient villas, which were commissioned by Austro-Hungarian aristocrats, and Aleppo’s pinewoods surround it.
