Ancona – Bozava (Zadar)

An inlet protected from northern winds.

This sea-lane is 67 miles long too; but it’s broader with the northwest wind, and a little narrower with the Southeast wind. It’s necessary to steer for 60°. At round mid crossing, we see at our right the artificial island called Calpurnia; it is little more than a half mile away and its presence confirms the right direction of sailing.
After continuing the voyage for few hours, the lighthouse of Veli Rat is sighted and we steer to it. The Veli Rat lighthouse signal that you’re entering Zadar; it rises on the northern point of the Island of Dugi Otok Island. When the lighthouse is sighted, it is time to fly the Croatian flag and the "Q" flag to signal, according to the International signal book, that you haven’t attended customs formalities yet.
Sailing on we left the lighthouse and Dugi Otok on our right, we cross the sea through Dugi Otrok and the two little islands called Lagnici (northwest). Several decades ago, a ship run aground the interior island and its prow came to the surface yet.
Owing to the shoal, please pay very attention to avoid navigation in the neighbourhood of the lighthouse. The central waters have a depth of 8/10 metres. We recommend keeping watch to the scandal-line, thus avoiding mistakes.
By steadying for two miles circa, you circle the Brskac island (a little bigger than the others), and leave it on your right steering Southeastwards by crossing the Islands; you leave Dugi Otok on your right and Zverinac on left. Pay attention to the shoal (3 metres)! If your boat draws more than 3 metres, sheer off Northwestward and leave on starboard Solace; it is a little Island and a lighthouse rises on its northern point.
Please attention; don’t head for the so-called "false mouth" by leaving the Brskac Island on your left; it is between Brskac Island and Dugi Otok (Borji’s head) and waters have a too low depth for permitting voyage. Cause to the shoal, many boats had very difficult crossing there.
Entering the Zverinacki canal, between Zverinac and Dugi Otok, are there two shoals and only one is signalled. For this reason, we recommend to head for Zmarasnji (northern point of the Zverinac Island).
From Zmarasnji head for the lighthouse of point Sv. Nedjelja, it defines the western part of the Bozava inlet. You’ll enter Bozava by steering southeastwards for round four miles. Bozava arises in an inner sheltered from the north winds. The charming Bozava is one of the most ancient towns in Dugi Otok, so much that it has been peopled since the Illyrian epoch and some very interesting old building arise there.
Besides, about fifteen years ago, it was built a jetty that shelters the town from the Southeast wind too (Croatians call it Jugo). Calling port at Bozava, you can go to the customs house (signalled with the Croatian flag) and dispatch all the necessary customs formalities to moor your boat and go visiting this beautiful Croatian little town. Zadar is far about four hours’ navigation. It’s impossible to head for Zadar directly, because customs formalities have to be attended by calling port at the nearest customs house in our course. From Ancona, it is allowed to touch Zadar directly in winter only; because in wintertime the customs house in Bozava is closed.
