The territory of the province of Ascoli Piceno
Already before the docking, coming from the sea, both in San Benedetto del Tronto and in Porto San Giorgio ports, looking down, the soft and gathered hills of Piceno reveal unforgettable landscapes of the soul. Under the shadow of bell towers, thousands of art, nature and identity events seem to thrive: friendly landscape of the senses. It is the landscape which saw history making a “thick fabric of settlements made of small and medium centres in fired brick or stone. A polycentric deployment which, through the space organization, leads to a vision of the world preferring the horizontal social and institutional relationships, supplied by the spirit of independence and community” (prof. Olimpia Gobbi).
The hilly backbones go down from the tops of the Sibillini mountains to the Adriatic and near the coast they transform into suggestive sea terraces. A horizon which is not only physical can be explored in the silence of its paths and stops.
On the sides of the coast hills it is possible to admire some remains of Mediterranean vegetation, with holm-oak, laurel, cluster pine and rich underwood. The coast develops for over 46 kilometres and a half, from Chienti mouth to the Tronto one and is limited by a subtle sandy line separating the sea and the foot of the near hills. The convex shapes movements of the hinterland hills define the geometric shapes of the crop rotations and of the different cultivations with polychrome results creating suggestive images according to the seasons succession. Everywhere cultivated lands show the work of men through olive groves, vineyards, orchards and cereals. On the tops of the hills the urban centres, often with towers and battlements.
It is a land of friendly people still able to respect the natural rhythms of the time for agriculture, of space for its settlements, of history for the wise recovery of the handiworks that can be enjoyed as exhibition places and museums of themselves.
On the roads, the plaiting of villages that can be reached for the wine and oil roads up to the urban centres, custody of time patrimony and everyday activities, with a friendly oenogastronomic reception, rich of the traditions of the local navy, of the valley communities and of the people living on the mountains. A research combining art itineraries, historical recollections, theatres, churches, monasteries and hermitages conquered amid the woods of the two national parks which, with the Piceno sea park and Sentina nature reserve are an evidence of an authentic land.
